santana

Last night we went to see Santana live at the UCF arena in Orlando, and it was spectacular.

As I looked around to guage the audience it was interesting to see all age and culture groups. Through the many associations and many musical influences that he has embraced since 1955 it is no wonder that ones ears can enjoy such a wonderful acuoustic flavor. He’s collaborated with artists such as Rob Thomas, Chad Kroeger, Chester Thomson, Wyclef Jean, Eric Clapton, Dave Mathews and the list goes on.

He embraces his guitar as an extension of his soul.

body

You’re teaching a lesson each day that you live;
Your actions are blazing a trail —Bosch

Do you ever think about the little things you do each day? That frustrated gesture you made aimed at the other driver on the road? Smiling with a stranger? The sarcastic remark directed at the waitress? The decision not to help beyond your job description at work.

Do you ever think about the impact of those little things?

You are more than your body… you are the full package of your thoughts and actions. You’re every move, every decision and every thought does make a difference. The imprint you are leaving behind, is happening through your existence of being involved, sincere, and responsible for your space —

because you are the pebble in the pond.

Work From Home?

Friday

It seems that with so many lay offs there are more and more people looking to work from home and twice as many looking for extra venues to generate income. I have worked from home for the last 4 years with the mortgage company I’m affiliated with… they do have local offices nationwide, and their company structure does allow many freedoms.

What I find challenging for many people who do work from home, is their ability to create the disciplines that will yield success. The first thing people need to do is set up a ‘work space’. This space should be respected as such.

For the most part most people may not have the luxury to have a designated room as a home office, so some will have to settle for a designated area. The reality is what it is and first step to success is to accept your constraints and work within them.

Here are some tips you can apply to improve your space and give your home business an edge:

Organize Your Desk
You will need items like pen holders, trays, CD/DVD, filing cabinets; storage can make a big difference to your workspace. Try to avoid starting a work session with a cluttered desk. In my home office I have the following: a rolodex for telephone numbers and business cards, several paper tray bins (one for filing and the other for pending work from the previous day), pen holder, filing cabinet and shelving for books, stationary and office supplies (staplers, etc)

Buy a Plant
Nothing brightens up a space like other forms of life. If you don’t have a green thumb, I find that cactus make a good hardy desk plant and they don’t take up a lot of space. On my desk I have designated a little ‘life center’ where I keep a vase, a few favorite rocks, candle and incense holder – these connect me to earth with the elements (the vase contains water, my rocks are earth, the incense is air and candle for fire). A bit of greenery can lift a room and make it a much more pleasant place to be.

Get some Color
A little artwork can add visual interest to your office space. In my home office I have a poster by John Wooden on leadership. You want things that inspire you and trigger your subconscious. Motivational posters are great for your home office. Keep in mind that you want to create a space where your mind knows that you are there to ‘work’.

Add a Goal Board or Wall-planner / Whiteboard
I find that using a whiteboard is fantastic way to ‘see’ my week ahead. I happen to keep two white boards: one for current task and the other is my dream board.

Improve the Lighting
If your office does not get a lot of daylight, you might want to begin by maximizing that. Make sure your windows are clear of anything that impedes the light. If you are not so lucky, you may want to strategically place some mirrors around your work space (definitely you will be able to see yourself when slacking off!). Nothing improves an office space like lighting. Even though I have an overhead light, I find that as I work late into the night the desk lamp lessens the stress on my eyes. There are many beautiful desk lamps to choose from that will make wanting to work at your desk a more enjoyable experience.

Tidy Up the Wires
Your cables will often run together in big clumps, you can get a string or rubber band and bind the cords together at intervals so that become one giant cord rather than a web of cables. You can also get plastic wire binders at your local office supply store. Also clamp long running wires to walls.

Dream Big Dreams

I have heard that if you create your dream by yourself, your dream is probably not big enough. I believe that sometimes we are afraid to follow our dreams, perhaps because we feel we may be ridiculed or maybe when we bring it out of our mind the dream may be too daunting to undertake.

When we start taking even the smallest steps in the directions of our dreams, a whole new world opens up. Creating our new life means letting go of the one we know. Following our dreams will require us to grow and change.

James Allen wrote: “Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so shall you become. Your vision is the promise of what you shall one day be; your ideal is the prophecy of what you shall at last unveil.”

violin

The headline news about about Philippe Quint who lost his $4MM violin and the New York cab driver who found it in the back of his cab returned it caught my attention.

There are certain things that I am attracted to, one being attention to detail. I mentioned the news to George and he immediatly said that he was sure it was a Stradivari violin…and sure enough it was. Stradivari took Amati’s violin design to the next level, not only in fine tuning various aspects of the body of the instrument but even enriching the color of the varnished he used.

Geoge’s cousin, Lubos Naprstek up in New York designs guitars – it is his hobby and passion. You can check out his work on his site.

Enjoy these two renditions of music being played on a violin. Now, is there a difference between a violin and a fiddle? Ha-ha-ha! Pancakes and Flap-jacks sure taste the same to me!
