How delicate life is, yet how powerful we can make that life.

I am humbled and awed at how appreciative a little bird can be and how naturally I understood the little birds message.

As I sat here I recall this tender moment:

The door bell rings and I answer it; I greet my two guests and welcome them inside. (keep in mind above the front door is a glass window)

Shortly as they stepped through the threshold I began closing the door and I heard a thump. The thump was then followed by a smaller duller thump.

A little bird fell to the ground. My guests immediately questioned if it was dead. I ran inside and grabbed a 3×5 card and gently scooped up the little bird.

I’ve never seen a little bird lose flight like that, or worse yet, crash.

I touched it’s little body and noticed how warm it was… I’ve never given CPR to a bird, yet I felt compelled to blow a gentle stream of air over it’s feathers. I whispered to the little bird “don’t go yet, you’ll be okay, I’ll take care of you”. I placed it on a small flower pot away from the hot pavement and put a little leaf over it to keep it cool. It shook its little feather and I whispered to it one more time.. you’ll be okay… but it didn’t move much more.

After 15 minutes my guests were ready to leave, as I opened the door the little bird stood there proudly with its little beak open and looked right up at me as if to say ‘Thank You’. I bent over gently so as not to scare it and whispered… ‘You’re welcome my little friend, you are free to fly once more’. It just looked back up at me with its little beak open.

I walked my guests to their car and when I returned the little bird was gone.

That simple act of that little bird being there with its beak open looking up at me as I opened the door.. it did not fly away… it was as if it waited to say thank you. It was one life acknowledging the other.


How many times do we take the smallest things for granted? The kindest gesture, a phone call, a smile, an opportunity, a friend, a loved one, your home, people, …. life? In a second it could be gone and yet the kindest gesture can give you the power to live.

Courage is In You

Some of us are inspired by another person’s courage, perhaps it’s because it gives us a glimpse of the same courage in ourselves?

Courage can be explained as knowing that something could be more important than one’s fear.

Some believe that those with courage act because they are not afraid. Yet… the easiest thing is to take action when you are not afraid. At the same time if you hold back and do nothing because you’re afraid, well that’s easy too!

To embrace the fear and take action despite of it, that takes courage!

Sometimes there are circumstances in our lives that test our courage. As if Life were testing us for a promotion and overcoming those challenges would merit moving up to the next level. That next level could be many things: more responsibility, handle more income, intense relationships etc etc.

What we must be willing to do is, embrace the opportunity to overcome the fear; to summon the courage that is naturally in us… because when opportunity comes to test us… it strikes when we least expect it.

This last year has offered me many opportunities to embrace my fears and step forward with courage. Many times I questioned myself if I had the strength to lead people now that they needed me the most. I found the courage to understand that it is in the doing that I will grow the most. The biggest fear for me is to have missed on living the best life for fear of not believing in myself.

Eleanor Roosevelt once said: Courage is more exhilarating than fear and in the long run it is easier. We do not have to become heroes overnight. Just a step at a time, meeting each thing that comes up, seeing it is not as dreadful as it appeared, discovering we have the strength to stare it down.

Loyalty as Your Currency

First, I’m applying this in the text of the work environment… keep in mind you don’t have to be self employed to apply this concept.

When people shift from employee to self employed status, many soon realize that it is in their ability to repeat their prospecting habit and develop basic skills of communication and follow up that financial success and stability can be attained. For it is they that control their future and it is their personal production that financial stability is dependent on… not the economy,not the company nor the media… it really is in the number of contacts made.

If you apply the formula of repetitive prospecting, soon you will be making good money as your sales skills and data base increases in this business; and as long as you keep making your minimum monthly bills and don’t have excessive spending habits you will find soon enough that money is not the challenge.

Now back to loyalty, simply put, all your hiring company owes you is the platform for you to perform your task, and you vice versa… to perform the task.

Loyalty used to mean that a company would hire you with the expectation you would work there for 30 plus years. You would show up for work on time, do a reasonably good job, and retire someday with a nice pension and gold watch. Today that expectation is no more.

Today, loyalty is more basic. A person should dedicate his/her talents and resources to the job at hand. The important thing to remember is this: We owe a job well done for as long as needed.

The challenge then is not what your company has to offer, nor how soon can you master the skills; the real challenge is dealing with people.

Your Customers:

Loyalty is important. Unless your prospects are loyal to you and to the transaction they will go else where. It is important to work with people that are friendly, motivated and easy to work with. Don’t make it a struggle, don’t push when your personality does not match… isn’t it wonderful when you work with people that want to be helped?

You can show your prospect the value through your consultation, loyalty starts with you making sure you are loyal to your clients and do the right thing.

Your Company:

Be loyal to your company and those members that work with you. Do not gossip, it does not help you and in the end it will back fire… you are there to make money, which in turn helps your family, your clients and allows you to develop your skills in becoming the best at what you have to offer.

Focus on your task and everyone will love you.

Also make sure your company is loyal to you.

Make sure you focus on the mission statement of your company, do your best work, focus on your production, become your manager’s friend he/she is there to help you. Don’t be one of those people that jump from company to company when things don’t go your way, stick it out and do your job.

Expectations from your company should include the assurance that your company is paying you on your commissioned work and that they are serving your customers with integrity.

When money does not become an object, loyalty will be at the fore front through the comfort and satisfaction that you and your company will stand through to do the right thing.
