Trivial and Mundane Moments

I’ve come to see life as an accumulation of trivial and mundane moments with an occasional flare of drama.

The magic is in the appreciation of the trivial and the mundane which defines the experience of life.

Eleanor Lerman‘s poem .. Starfish best expresses the trivial and mundane moments life allows us to live:

This is what life does. It lets you walk up to the store to buy breakfast and the paper, on a stiff knee.
It lets you choose the way you have your eggs, your coffee. Then it sits a fisherman down beside you at the counter who say, Last night, the channel was full of starfish.

And you wonder, is this a message, finally, or just another day?

Life lets you take the dog for a walk down to the pond, where whole generations of biological processes are boiling beneath the mud. Reeds speak to you of the natural world: they whisper, they sing. And herons pass by.

Are you old enough to appreciate the moment? Too old?
There is movement beneath the water, but it may be nothing. There may be nothing going on.

And then life suggests that you remember the years you ran around, the years you developed a shocking lifestyle, advocated careless abandon, owned a chilly heart. Upon reflection, you are genuinely surprised to find how quiet you have become.

And then life lets you go home to think about all this. Which you do, for quite a long time.

Later, you wake up beside your old love, the one who never had any conditions, the one who waited you out. This is life’s way of letting you know that you are lucky. (It won’t give you smart or brave, so you’ll have to settle for lucky.) Because you were born at a good time. Because you were able to listen when people spoke to you. Because you stopped when you should have and started again.

So life lets you have a sandwich, and pie for your late night dessert. (Pie for the dog, as well.) And then life sends you back to bed, to dreamland, while outside, the starfish drift through the channel, with smiles on their starry faces as they head out to deep water, to the far and boundless sea.

The Spirit of the Hummingbird

It is said that Hummingbird brings love as no other medicine can.

Hummingbirds embody the magic of living.

The hummingbird is the only creature that can stop dead while traveling at full speed; it can hover as well as go forward, backward, up or down. Hummingbirds live on nectar and searches for the sweetness of life. It’s purpose is to pollinate the flowers of the world. Its long “nose” lets it bypass the often tough and bitter outer layer to find the hidden treasurers underneath.

…and this is where we find the lesson: sometimes in life we need to bypass the obvious that are ‘eyes’ can see to find the hidden treasures of the challenge.

Native American Chief Redarrow believes that the hummingbird offers us the message of adaptability in life’s many situations and being able to “roll with the punches”. When you choose the spirit guide of the hummingbird, you adapt easily to whatever situation you may find yourself in, and make the most of your new circumstances. You don’t waste time looking back and wishing for “what was” for you are concerned with making the most of “what is”.

Hummingbird is also about inner joy. A hummingbird person takes great pleasure in spreading joy and love and beauty to all around, and have the gift of taking that inner joy into new and different surroundings.

When you embrace the hummingbird spirit guide your presence brings joy to others. You have a talent for finding the good in people, because you know that, if you can only get beyond that tough outside layer, you’ll find goodness and beauty inside.

You know instinctively where beauty abides and, near or far, you journey to that place. You move comfortably within a beautiful environment and help others taste the succulent nectar of life. Hummingbird disdains ugliness or harshness, and quickly flies away from discord or disharmony.

When you embrace the humming bird spirit guide you automatically are drawn to find the good in situations and people, and to walk away from people that are negative and situations that don’t honor your higher self.

Spring

When shall I fly my friend,
or am I to be shackled to the bread of earth?

Take me on your current sister wind
my wandering heart beckons to return home.

The question a paradox in my mind.

Where is home?

I’m a soul shattered in pieces yearning reconciliation.

Alas, the spring of life is upon me once more.

Some stranger comes to mind,
shadow-like before my eyes.

Someone raps at my heart,
I fly and soar – this feeling to reconcile.

All forgotten. All is new.
Spring… I come to you holding my heart in hand.

Nomad and the Garden

I once met a nomad, an interesting fellow.
Quite intelligent and genuinely mellow.

Moving in and out of circles never staying too long
Just a spectator of others looking for what’s wrong

Others may have envied his life apparently care free
A chameleon of sorts some may agree

The nomad and I would meet in the garden
Engaging in ligneous banter that silence would pardon

In our differences we found our path
The wind, sun and eternity in common we hath

While others looked for structure in common
He struggled for moments of refrained abandon

The nomad would drink til the well was dry
A spectator of his own life far and nigh

While he may be a fox and a hunter
deep within him was the boy and the lover

While believing he makes his fate… Fate has made him.

Be forever changed by love.

Love can set you free, leaving you to experience the kind of freedom that is boundless and emancipating.
Not to be confused with the primrose path, more so the knowing that everything else is just work until you are with your beloved once more.

Valentine lollipops, rose petal beds, smooth dark chocolate… and (need I say more?). Forever …Happy Valentine.
